If you watch my instagram story, you know I am not a morning person. I like to stay in bed relaxing with my comics whenever possible, but boy am I glad I woke up early thursday morning to catch the opening ceremonies speaker Petra Kolber’s session during Blog Fest at the Idea World Fitness Convention. Petra’s new book The Perfection Detox: Tame your Inner Critic, Live Bravely, and Unleash Your Joy is coming out this month and I can not wait to get my hands on it!
Petra walked on stage in a beautiful fashionable floral shirt, black slacks, a cute pixie hair cut, a huge smile on her face and all the confidence in the world. She looked like Wonder Woman taking the stage, completly confident in her space. I didn’t mean to, but I immediately started comparing myself to her. I thought the only thing I could possibly have in common with this very well put together woman was our want to help others. Then Petra said good morning to us and kicked off her shoes so she could walk around the stage barefoot while she talked to us. Not only did this make me laugh out loud, but it made me realize we were more similar than I originally thought. She was showing us the Diana Prince to her Wonder Woman.
Petra’s talk was very inspiring about how to be true to yourself and embrace who you really are without trying to fit into a mold of what we think is “perfect” or what the world is telling us is “perfect”. She told us about her experience and background in the fitness industry, but what she shared next really made me want to listen to what she had to say even more. She shared that like most of us, myself included, she also struggles with anxiety and the feeling of not being good enough. I really resonated with some of her struggles and fears.
I was at Blogfest and attending her session because I want to learn, grow and, most importantly, I want to help others be better. I know I struggle with getting videos and articles out to you guys because I am always worried that the content I made is not perfect. Even now as I write this, that small voice in my head is throwing shade. Petra talked about how to deal with that little voice and tame the little critic in your head.
Perfectionism is fear in really good shoes. -Petra Kolber
Petra’s message really seemed to concentrate on how to be the best you can be, but not at the expense of your happiness or health. She spoke about how in today’s society there are different types of perfection that we try to live up to or achieve. But really, no one connects to perfection because we all have cracks. Its like how I love Spiderman that much more because I also know him as the awkward Peter Parker.
No one connects to perfect, We connect in our cracks. –Petra Kolber
It is so easy for us compare what we have with what we think someone else has, when really we should only be comparing ourselves to our own self. With the onset of social media it is easier and easier for us to compare ourselves with someone else’s persona online.
The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight real. –Steve Furtick
After Petra’s session I hope to live a little more bravely for you all and implement some of what I learned in Petra’s talk and her new book so I can better focus on the things that matter. My goal after Petra’s session is to unleash my joy so I can help you to unleash yours, to be the best Super-you that you can be. Petra’s book The Perfection Detox: Tame your Inner Critic, Live Bravely, and Unleash Your Joy is available on Amazon August 14th. Pre-orders and the audible version are all ready underway.
