Holy Plantar Fasciitis Batman!!!

32 Days till the Maui half marathon

53 days till the Malibu half marathon

I am feeling very…….. Disheartened

Today’s  Batman Run Goal: Combo Run- 1 mile warm up, 2 miles at goal pace, 4X 3 minute intervals at a physical exertion of a level 7 & 1 mile cool down

Actual Workout– 1 mile warm up mostly fast walking, 1 mile almost at goal pace & 1 mile at goal pace.

How did the workout feel? Very Hard with a lot of pain in my right foot/heel/arch and right hip. I felt like I was uneven or limping on the treadmill. I tried a 2nd treadmill hoping it was the machine and not me. It almost felt like one leg was longer than the other.

You may or may not know I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis for quite some time. It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride. With my feet feeling good, than bad, than so-so then horrible. It has started to impact other areas of my body, like my knees, ankles and hips. My ankles now feel super weak and my right hip feels jammed. I have been doing daily ice, massage, stretching and I feel like I have made no real progress.

I finally made an appointment to see a Sports Medicine Doctor, then a Podiatrist, and finally a Physical Therapist.  The good news, its only plantar fasciitis and not something terribly worse. The bad news is millions of people suffer from this and there is no real “cure”. Its an over use injury and the Mayo clinic defines it as “Plantar fasciitis (PLAN-tur fas-e-I-tis) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes (plantar fascia).” Essentially when ever I take a step down, or lift my foot up I feel a sharp pain in the back of my arch right where it hits my heel. Its the worst in the middle of the night or after sitting for long periods of time.  However, when I am sitting still, driving or laying in bed, my whole heel feels like its burning or I have the sensation of a Charlie Horse.. My right foot is much worse than my left…. After seeing 2 doctors and a physical therapist, I wish I could report I have a lot of new things to try and an easy fix to this problem many people have. Unfortunately I do not. I am doing everything other than the one thing I do not have the time for…. MORE REST!!!

I am at a loss and have had to change my focus of beating my previous 1/2 marathon times, to now just finishing. I started my training early so I would have the time to train and improve. Creating an over use injury was never on the table!

COMING SOON: How to help alleviate Plantar Fasciitis…Same Bat time, Same Bat place!
